The other day I walked in to pick up my daughter Alex from her daycare center. As I entered the room and found all of the 2 - 3 year olds huddled close to the door leading to the playground. Apparently I had come just after they announced to the kids that they would be going ‘outside’. Being that Alex loves going outside she was the closest to the door and was surrounded by all of the other children. She didn’t see or hear me enter the room, however, as soon as I spoke she poked her head through all of the kids and shouted across the room, “Mama” and came towards me. I didn’t even have to say her name, but she recognized my voice. Isn’t it amazing what sounds and voices we learn to recognize? The Bible refers to those who follow after Christ as being sheep and to Christ as being our shepherd. Sheep are not very smart and cannot see well, but they learn at an early age to recognize their shepherd’s voice. Isn’t it time we become like little children again and learn to recognize the voice of our heavenly Father? And then when we hear him talking, shouldn’t we do like my daughter did and poke our heads through the crowd, talk to him and come to him? He is our shepherd and is ready to lead us in every way if we only would learn to recognize his voice.John 10:14 I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep and my sheep know me.

Jen, You are so right. The older we grow the more we think we know and the further away we get from the Lord without realizing it. Recognizing our heavenly Father’s voice comes from daily contact. Besides, we are all children in the eyes of the Lord. Each one of us walking at a difference pace with the Lord. Despite the fact that we are adults, some of us have the child-like spirit of Alex while others are like a teenager who knows it all and wants to do their own thing. I have found myself in both instances. Thank goodness for God’s grace and patience. Thank you again for reminding me how important it is that I spend time with the Lord so that I may recognize his voice. P.S. Alex makes my heart smile.
